The function of the Y-Tool is to provide access below a downhole ESP system by offsetting the ESP and providing straight line access to below the wireline, coiled tubing or other mechanical or hydraulic tools. For the purposes of running a production log, a special running tools is used and the blanking plug is removed. This enables real time logging and prevents re-circulation of produced fluids. Normally, 7 inch casing is the minimum casing size required to run both the ESP and the bypass tubing. (Novomet, link below, claims to provide bypass for 5 3/4" casing.)
